WHAT can you get for £3,000? Is three grand enough to get you something both usable and reliable is or is it just enough money to buy a premium headache?
You’d be amazed what can be had for such a small amount of money. Indeed that’s a lot more than I’d ever spend on my own car and I work in the business.
So, for once, I’m going to be totally sensible and assume we are scouring the pages of UsedCarExpert for a family motor that will be reliable, capable and won’t make you look like a cheapskate or a debt collector.
The key factor is fuel. A petrol Mondeo will be painless to own, will ride and handle brilliantly and be cheap to fix, which counts for a lot if you’re on a budget. Also, there are loads to choose from so it won’t take ages to find the spec you want.

The Accord is a paragon of reliability. Although it’s possible to get high mileage versions of the 2004 to 2009 model for £3,000, it makes more sense to go for the model before and get a mint example of one the most reliable cars you can get for any money.

If you want a family hatchback that is extremely reliable, cheap to run and very practical then this might be for you. The Octavia shares its chassis and running gear with the mighty Golf and in many ways slightly shades its premium brother. Passenger and luggage space are huge and refinement outstanding in this class. A car we often recommend.

The wild card here. If you have a bit of petrol in your veins but worry about the reliability and running costs of older prestige cars then this is the answer. Its build quality and reliability are peerless and the IS can be serviced cheaply by any Toyota dealer or specialist. Despite this it remains a credible alternative to a BMW 3 Series or Audi A4 of the same vintage. If you’re on a budget but want something a bit special then look no further.
UsedCarExpert.co.uk Cars For Sale: A 2001 car with a full service history and under 60,000 miles on the clock is available for only £2,990.
